How to Boost Your Internet for the Best Gaming Experience

Playing games that require a fast, stable internet connection has become the norm for many of us. When we were kids, you might even remember telling your parents or siblings to get off the internet because you were lagging so badly. Fortunately, due to rapid technological advancements, we now have access to a better internet. However, there are instances that even when you are paying for the most expensive plan, you still experience network slowdowns occasionally.

In this article, we’ll share some tips to boost your internet for the best gaming experience — not only any tip, but tips that really work, as we’ve been doing it firsthand. Let’s begin!

What Is the Best Internet Type for Gaming?

First things first, you might ask, what is really the best internet type for gaming? Well, any fast home internet will work, but we recommend fiber internet if it’s available in your area. It’s because it’s the only internet type that provides the lowest latency, which is essential for gaming. Unfortunately, fiber internet is not widely available in the US right now, so you can still opt for cable or DSL. It’s just that they cannot provide the same gaming experience fiber can.

On the other hand, if you live in a remote area, you can opt for satellite internet. While this type of internet is known to be extremely slow, technologies have improved, and you can now get decent internet speeds from satellite internet. You just need to find a reliable satellite internet provider.

Tips on How to Boost Your Internet for Better Gaming

Below, we’ll share some tips that we’ve been doing to improve our internet speed for the best gaming experience.

1. Take a look at your internet speed and bandwidth.

You don’t need to have the highest internet plan to play online games seamlessly, as at least 20-40Mbps would work just fine. However, you also need to consider your bandwidth.

For example, if your siblings always use the internet to stream movies, browse the internet, or video call with their friends, it will strain the bandwidth, which will significantly slow the internet down. If this is the case and your speed and bandwidth are too low for your needs, you might need to upgrade your internet plan.

On the other hand, if your internet provider is not holding up its end of the bargain, then it’s best to switch to a different provider with a better reputation. You can never go wrong with some of the biggest internet providers like Spectrum Internet, AT&T, and Verizon.

2. Reset your modem and router.

Many people don’t reset their internet equipment regularly even though it’s an essential habit every internet user must adopt. It’s easy to do this, and it will only take less than five minutes of your day. You simply need to turn off your modem and router, unplug them, wait for at least 30 seconds to one minute, then plug it back in and turn them on. Voila! You’ve already performed a power cycle. In most cases, performing this can resolve any connectivity issues you’re experiencing.

3. Relocate your router.

If you’re playing via WiFi, we recommend you relocate your router to the centermost area in your house that is free of obstructions that interferes with how your router sends signals. You can mount it or place it in an area where it wouldn’t be a distraction. Just avoid placing it inside the cabinet or anywhere secluded.

4. Use a wired connection.

Connecting your gaming device to an Ethernet cable can significantly boost the speed and stability of your connection. While WiFi can be more convenient as you don’t need to be in a specific place to use the internet, interferences around your home can affect the speed and reliability of your WiFi. So, if possible, it’s best to always connect your device to an Ethernet cable for a better connection.

5. Offload unnecessary devices.

If you have old and smart devices around your home you don’t use but are still connected to the internet, you should disconnect them as they also take a significant amount of your bandwidth. Just re-connect them if you ever need to use them again.
